Mother Shares Her Own Adoption Story During National Adoption Awareness Month

SAN JOSE, CA (ANS) -- With National Adoption Awareness Month (November 2012) less than two weeks away, Noodle & Boo Founder, Christine Burger recently took a few minutes out of her day to talk with Assist News about adoption, her mission and the idea behind her company.

Whether it’s in her personal life as a wife and mother, through her company, or by her involvement in various humanitarian aid efforts, Christine Burger is committed to living out her purpose – To make the difference in the lives of children around the world.

Noodle & Boo’s mission is inspired by Burger’s personal passion to provide a voice for the unheard children, suffering around the world.

After a nine year struggle to start a family, The Burgers’ prayers were answered with the birth of their first son, Andrew (also known as Noodle), now 14 and then again with the birth of their second son, Matthew (Boo), 10. God has also continued to complete The Burger Family with the adoption of their daughter, Dibora, 8.

“I started the company to help kids. My background and career is in software. When I got pregnant with Matthew, I was ready to retire from my career. I had always felt like I had a calling to serve and that my purpose was to bridge the gap for children who didn’t have parents who could fight for them. I was looking for a way to begin to do what I believe my calling is.”

She said Noodle & Boo is an idea with a means to an end, “Since I am a business person and I have that experience, those principles can be applied to any type of business. I had an interest in children’s skin care because of Andrew’s eczema. We started with a vision of helping kids and that is what continues to drive us.”

Her infertility didn’t cause her to lose hope. Burger said the difficult times she experienced have tested her, but that they’ve also given her a greater opportunity to strengthen her faith by relying on God and resting in His promises. Through the encouragement of her father and other family members, Burger stepped out in faith. Starting Noodle & Boo was not only a way to come up with a treatment for her son’s skin condition, but a way to help others.

Lovingly named after her boys’ nicknames, Noodle & Boo was founded in an effort to create a vehicle to give back. Helping children is at the heart of the company.

In 2003, Burger hired a chemist and they worked for two years on the formulas for the products. The products began shipping to stores in 2005 and the company served small, specialty stores at first. In 2006, they began distribution to larger retailers like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. Today, it’s a successful company that is making a huge difference.

One example of how the company continues to meet the needs of others is through an initiative like 2007’s “Raise Your Hand Campaign.” One hundred percent of the profits from Noodle & Boo’s Believe Honey Bar were donated toward a clean water system for a school in Ethiopia.

Burger said she first traveled to Ethiopia as part of a “Raise Your Hand Campaign,” to raise money for clean water for a school there. The goal of the trip was to visit the school and learn about what it was going to take to put in the water system. Through the course of the trip, she also met a little girl named, Dibora, who her family has since adopted.

While in Ethiopia on a mission trip supporting Noodle & Boo’s safe water initiatives, Burger first met Dibora. Dibora was sick and Burger made it financially possible her to go to a clinic and get treated by a doctor. She also found Dibora a boarding home.

“Dibora has been with us three years. It was a surprise blessing,” Burger said. “Initially, I had no intention of adopting her. It grew from getting her medical treatment, finding her a place to live and wanting her to go to school.”

She said Dibora was put in a lottery for nationals so that she could attend a private school. Then, Burger was notified that Dibora wasn’t chosen, but they said that if she adopted her, Dibora would be eligible to participate in school, because she would be an American and not considered as a national.

“When I talked to my husband, Craig, he said, ‘Well, honey, if you are thinking about adopting her…If we adopt her, why would we leave her in Ethiopia?’ And that began the conversation,” Burger said. “My husband is an amazing man. He said, ‘I never want you to feel like you didn’t follow your heart and if that is where your heart is, you should take it as far as you can.’ A year-and-a-half later, she was here.”

Burger said her company had a giving program in place long before they were profitable. “Of course, the goal is to grow bigger and to have more resources to give. The ‘Raise Your Hand Campaign’ and the clean water program in Ethiopia is just one opportunity that we’ve had over the last few years to give back,” Burger said. “We’ve had some pretty amazing things come along and it has been a blessing.”
